She was cowered down in the corner of the kennel with some other 6 to 8 month old puppies who were competing for attention. I looked over and saw that she was trembling--it seemed uncontrollably. I went in and sat down next to her to see how she would react and she just continued to tremble. After we just sat next to each other for awhile, she allowed me to pet her even though you could see how fearful she was of the least little movement. Maggie then allowed me to put a leash on her but she would not stand up. I asked for assistance and one of helpers at the shelter carried her outside for me since she would not stand, much less walk. We sat out front of the intake building on the landscape stones by the sidewalk and she just laid down. We stayed out there for 45 minutes and she continued to tremble. People would pass by and she would let them pet her and she would use the bathroom because of her fear. She needed to know that she would be okay even though her life had been turned upside down when her owner surrendered her and she was in a very strange place with a lot of barking dogs. When it was time for me to leave, I had to get assistance putting her back in the kennel and my heart was breaking for her the entire time. I volunteer on Sundays since I work full time through the week so the following Sunday she was the first one I went to see about. Maggie was still just as fearful so another volunteer that also walks dogs and I asked the staff if she could be moved outside to the courtyard to see if that would help. Maggie did appear to improve somewhat but was still very fearful and did not want to come out of the kennel. At least she was walking around and sniffing. Some of the staff told me she would hardly ever come out of the kennel. Each Sunday when I go to walk dogs, I went to see about Maggie first because I could see the potential in her to become a very loving, good natured dog. Each weekend she has progressed to the point that she would respond with a wag when her name is called and in time, she is becoming a different dog. You could see by the look on her face and body language that she was beginning to feel more at ease. I began fostering Maggie on September 19 in the hope that she can return to be the dog she was meant to be. The first two days she was at my house, my crew (six dogs) welcomed her in, she sniffed around in the back yard (which is fenced in) so they can run and play freely, and I could see how her eyes seem to light up. I introduced each one of my pack to Maggie, one at a time, so she would not be overwhelmed and she did fantastic with everyone. Since she has been at my home, Maggie has not had a single accident in the house so she obviously is housebroken. Maggie has not offered to jump on furniture, has extremely good manners when waiting to be fed, and loves to play with a certain squeaky dog toy that is a favorite of my dogs. Maggie has overcome so much of her fearfulness and her demeanor has completely changed. She has become accustomed to the crate and will voluntarily go in it when she is asked. Maggie has amazed me with how far she has come. She will make such a great, loving dog for a forever family and it is my wish for her to find a loving family that can spend time with her and let her know how much she is loved and that life can be good again.
